October 2 2018 – Porsche Museum Zuffenhausen

Yes, today we visited the centre of the Porsche universe: Zuffenhausen.

The Porsche factory relocated here from Gmund, Austria in the early 1950s and the original small factory for the 356 models has grown into a huge manufacturing complex. In 2016 we visited Gmund and saw the original factory building, a converted sawmill and the small private museum there.

The museum in Zuffenhausen is an architected modern temple of Porsche!

This is an office building and the centrepiece in the roundabout on Porschestrasse.

The cars are displayed mostly historically in sequence as you walk up a sequence of display areas to the top of the building.

Let’s say James Dean…

A recreation of model 356 #1. Too good in the details to have been the original.

The 130 kg bodywork – hanging from four scales to prove the point!

Yes engineers – we believe you.

The complete car.

944 – the most under displayed car in the museum.

My personal favourite – the 962.

Closely followed by this bad boy the 919 turbo hybrid Le Mans winner.

The temple has many chalices.

Here is one from Canada

The Boxster prototype from the Detroit Auto Show.

These guys are nuts for efficiency – a machined TITANIUM crankshaft!

And a flat 16 cylinder race engine.

Ok that’s all we can take for one day – time to go home.
