May 28 Autobahn Notes

Good driving but the car got wet and dirty…and there’s bugs on the windshield, can I have a new one please.

Our driving time was good just about 6 hours for approx. 650km.

That was not including the 45 minutes to find the Autobahn after leaving Leipzig. Despite the months of careful route plotting the Garmin had a meltdown, have you ever experienced any of these. “Follow the highlighted route” but there is nothing but the little car symbol on the display. “Make a legal U-turn as soon as possible” twelve times in a row. Followed by something I have never seen before, an endless loop of “Recalculating”.  You have to wonder – Garmin also sells GPS units for aeroplanes!

The car also has a Nav system so after we told Garmin where to go we let the backup do the work and it did so flawlessly.

The Autobahn was a thing of wonder. No-one passes on the right, trucks by and large stay right and keep out of the way. The ones to watch out for are the people in little cars pulling RV type trailers (caravans) they like to do crazy things without looking or signalling. The left lane is for going fast and I mean fast, we hit 170kph a few times and had to get over as the Audis (and it was by and large Audis) go by at over 200.  That’s just fine but somehow I like to know the people around me quite well if I am driving that fast close to them.

There is little margin for error and there are some spectacular high speed accidents but overall it all seems to work well due to the fact that most drivers are disciplined and careful of others. I can’t imagine that working out well in Ontario for example.
