June 1 : Places you can’t get to

DSC00324

Continuing our theme, this is the on-ramp to the A8 Autobahn we needed for the trip to Luzerne, closed for a long time for construction. We added some scenic byways to the route and rejoined the highway in Innsbruck. I guess the locals knew the alternatives but not us.

We left Austria and then spent about 25 minutes in Lichenstein which was the only place where we saw what looked like a border (but did not have to stop) before entering Switzerland.

The town of Weggis is on Lake Lucerne, a large lake with four arms. Weggis is one of several seaside towns on Lake Lucerne which seem to be used a lot for vacation spots.

As the weather forecast was good for today we decided to make this the day for the 3 mountain passes loop. These are the Susten, Furka and Grimsel passes. The Furka pass features in the movie Goldfinger. Goldfinger’s Rolls Royce can be seen driving up the pass with Oddjob at the wheel and Bond following. I thought I had located the spot where Goldfinger stops to buy fruit and wanted to see it.

No Aston Martin and gadgets for us – but I think we could give him a good run – tire shredding not allowed!

Now back to our theme:

Yes that’s right it says Furka Pass closed. The Gotthard Pass is down for construction and the Susten and Grimsel were closed due to snow and weather. So no passes for us – too early in the season for reliable weather up there. Guess we have to come back for them.

We made a slow trip back to the apartment stopping for lunch and looking about the town of Brunnen.

One of the ferries that run regular service around the lake; the Brunnen water front and a lake view.

Also some sad news, today I lost a long time friend, Warren Bain passed away in Virginia. Warren was the first person I met after moving to Oakville and joined his circle of friends at high school. He will be missed.

Tomorrow we take the ferry to Lucerne for some more Swiss adventures.  M&M.
